Suryakumar Yadav’s heroics steer India past USA in T20 World Cup opener

India survived an early scare to defeat the United States by 29 runs in the opening match of the T20 World Cup at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Posting 161 for nine, India’s innings was powered by a blistering 84 from 49 balls by Suryakumar Yadav, which proved decisive against a spirited American side that briefly threatened a historic upset.

The match began under overcast skies, with fans arriving early for the tournament’s opening ceremony. India’s innings, however, started disastrously. Opener Abhishek Sharma, the world’s top-ranked batter in the format, was dismissed on the first ball, and by the end of the powerplay, India had lost four wickets for just 46 runs. Shadley van Schalkwyk’s three-wicket over had fans holding their breath as an upset loomed large.

Despite fielding errors from the Americans, including dropped catches of Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar himself, India were under pressure at 63 for four. It was at this point that Suryakumar took control, accelerating with precise strokeplay and taking advantage of the final overs to post a competitive total. His late flourish added 21 runs off the last over, proving vital after USA’s key bowler Ali Khan was forced off the field due to a knee injury.

In reply, the USA began strongly but were quickly checked by India’s pace attack. Mohammed Siraj, making his first T20 international appearance since July 2024, and Arshdeep Singh shared the early wickets, reducing the Americans to a challenging position. A resilient partnership of 58 between Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthi offered hope, but the chase ultimately faltered as wickets fell regularly.

Siraj reflected on his unexpected opportunity, saying, “When I was sitting on the flight to Mumbai, I thought it was a dream. Suddenly Surya called me and told me to get ready – I couldn’t believe it. I came, played the match, and everything fell into place.”

India’s victory, while expected on paper, highlighted both the depth of their batting and the importance of seizing key moments in high-pressure matches. Suryakumar’s fearless innings ensured that the tournament favourites avoided a shock and set the tone for their World Cup campaign.
