Venezuela Faces Uncertain Future Following Maduro’s Arrest

Caracas, Venezuela — As news spreads of President Nicolás Maduro’s capture by U.S. forces, Venezuelans are reacting with a mix of hope, apprehension, and uncertainty. The streets of Caracas on Saturday reflected a range of emotions, from cautious celebration to vocal protest.

Residents emerged cautiously after a night punctuated by explosions in the Caracas Valley. Dina, a local, expressed tentative optimism, saying that with Maduro removed, she sees “a light at the end of the tunnel.” However, like many others, she chose to withhold her full identity, citing concerns about safety amid the tense political climate.

Jorge, who lives near the capital, echoed the cautious mood. While expressing gratitude for U.S. involvement, he acknowledged the uncertainty ahead. “Taking Maduro away does not guarantee stability,” he said. “We don’t know what the coming days will bring.”

Meanwhile, Maduro loyalists staged rallies in Caracas, demanding the release of their leader. The city’s mayor, Carmen Meléndez, aligned with Maduro’s United Socialist Party, joined protesters denouncing what they called the president’s “abduction.”

Early Saturday, U.S. forces carried out a series of targeted operations in the Venezuelan capital, culminating in Maduro’s capture. Washington has accused him of leading a “narco-terrorist” regime and overseeing illicit activities, including drug trafficking. Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, has consistently denied involvement in these activities and has frequently suppressed opposition voices during his tenure.

As Maduro and his wife are being extradited to New York City to face charges related to drug trafficking and weapons, Venezuelans remain uncertain about the country’s future. President Donald Trump has indicated that the U.S. will manage Venezuela’s oil resources temporarily until a permanent political solution is established.

Even among those who welcome Maduro’s removal, concerns linger. Dina expressed skepticism about U.S. promises, highlighting the unpredictability of international interventions. Many citizens, she said, hope only for economic improvement in a nation struggling with years of crisis.

Safety concerns continue to pervade daily life. Jorge recounted sightings of armed paramilitary groups, known as colectivos, patrolling Caracas streets, reflecting lingering tensions. Political figures loyal to Maduro, including Diosdado Cabello, remain influential, adding to the uncertainty about who will ultimately hold power.

Venezuelans in exile have also been vocal, with millions celebrating in cities across the globe. Yet, for many still in Venezuela, the situation remains precarious. Millions have left the country, while countless others continue to endure hardship, imprisonment, or displacement.

“This is just the beginning,” said Sandra, another Caracas resident. “There is still a long road ahead, and the challenges we face are immense.”
