Cuban Cigar Festival Postponed Amid Deepening Energy Crisis

Cuba’s annual Festival del Habano, a major celebration of the country’s world-famous cigars, has been postponed indefinitely due to worsening fuel shortages and power outages across the island.

Organizers said the decision was made to protect the quality and international reputation of the festival, which typically attracts more than 1,300 participants from around 70 countries. The event includes visits to tobacco plantations, cigar factories, and opportunities to sample Cuban cigars, considered among the finest in the world.

The fuel shortage, exacerbated by restrictions on oil shipments from key suppliers, has caused widespread power cuts and disrupted essential services, including hospitals and water pumping stations. Aviation fuel shortages have also led several airlines to suspend flights to and from Cuba, affecting tourism and international travel.

Officials said they are working to establish a new date for the festival once conditions improve, emphasizing that the priority is to ensure participants experience the event at the highest standard.

Cuba’s energy crisis reflects longstanding economic challenges on the island, which have been intensified by limitations on trade and oil imports. Organizers of the Festival del Habano stressed that postponement was necessary to maintain the integrity and prestige of the celebration, which plays an important cultural and economic role in the country.
