Inside a Rockette’s Christmas in New York City
For a century, the Rockettes have been synonymous with Christmas in New York City, dazzling audiences at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. This year, troupe member Brooklyn Bronson shares her personal tips for enjoying the city’s holiday magic.
Bronson, in her fourth season with the troupe, explains that for the Rockettes, Christmas starts early. “We start rehearsals in September, so Christmas starts pretty early for us,” she says. “Six hours a day, six days a week… And I love it! Christmas is my favourite holiday, so it’s really special.”
Originally from Tualatin, Oregon, Bronson studied dance under a former Rockette and earned a BFA in Dance from Chapman University. Her journey mirrors the dreams of countless fans who first saw the Christmas Spectacular as children. “I got to meet a Rockette when I was eight,” she recalls. “She was my inspiration, and becoming one has been my dream.”
From November until New Year’s, Bronson and the troupe perform up to four shows a day, entertaining families who make the show a cherished tradition.
Outside the stage, Bronson enjoys exploring New York’s festive highlights. She points to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting as official kick-offs to the season. And when it comes to treats, she loves hot cocoa from Times Square favorites like Serendipity and Glace, making cold-weather indulgences even more special.
This year also marks the Rockettes’ centennial, celebrated with the temporary renaming of Sixth Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets to “Rockette Way” and special exhibits at the Museum of Broadway. “Over 500 Rockettes came to our opening night, spanning generations,” Bronson says. “It was so special to share the stage with them and feel the standing ovations after every number.
