China Upholds UN World Order in Meeting with Finland’s Prime Minister
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday emphasized China’s commitment to upholding the UN-based international order during a meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Beijing.
Xi stated that “China is willing to work with Finland to firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core,” highlighting the country’s stance amid evolving global geopolitics. His remarks come shortly after US President Donald Trump announced plans for a new “Board of Peace,” raising concerns about potential rivalries with the UN.
The two leaders discussed a range of topics including bilateral cooperation and international issues. Orpo, on a four-day visit to China, joins a series of Western leaders who have engaged with Beijing in recent weeks as uncertainty around US policies prompts nations to explore alternative partnerships.
Despite the cordial meeting, China and Finland have differing views on sensitive matters, such as Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and strategic competition in the Arctic region. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen has previously noted China’s significant financial support to Russia’s war efforts, although China maintains a neutral position and has not condemned Moscow’s invasion.
The visit underscores Beijing’s desire to strengthen multilateral diplomacy while asserting its role in the international system centered around the UN. NATO and other Western allies continue to monitor China’s growing influence, particularly in Arctic regions, where collective defense strategies are being considered to counter potential challenges.
The discussions between Xi and Orpo reflect the broader international efforts to balance diplomacy with security, emphasizing the role of multilateral frameworks in maintaining global stability.
