Jeju Island visa-free entry for Indians after influencer detained at a South Korea airport has raised fresh concerns among travellers planning to visit the popular holiday destination.
The Indian Embassy in Seoul has issued an advisory to Indian nationals following recent incidents in which travellers were either denied entry or faced inconvenience upon arrival under the visa waiver scheme for Jeju Island.
Jeju Island, located in South Korea, allows Indian passport holders to enter without a visa for up to 30 days. However, the facility is strictly limited to travellers flying directly to the island and does not permit onward travel to mainland South Korea.
The advisory comes after an Indian content creator and his spouse were reportedly detained for nearly 38 hours upon arrival before being sent back to India. Despite carrying travel documents, the couple faced questioning by immigration authorities, highlighting that the visa waiver programme does not guarantee automatic entry.
According to the embassy, final admission into South Korea remains solely at the discretion of immigration officials at the airport. Travellers must satisfy authorities that their visit is strictly for short-term tourism purposes.
Indian nationals planning to travel under the Jeju Island visa waiver have been advised to carry printed copies of essential documents. These include a confirmed return ticket, hotel reservation covering the entire stay, a detailed day-by-day travel itinerary, proof of sufficient financial means such as recent bank statements or international cards, and a passport valid for at least six months. Travel insurance, while not mandatory, is strongly recommended.
Officials have warned that travellers who are unable to clearly explain their travel plans or demonstrate adequate financial capacity may face refusal of entry. Immigration officers may conduct interviews upon arrival, and visitors are expected to answer questions truthfully, calmly and consistently.
The embassy also stressed that the Jeju visa-free entry scheme does not allow travel to mainland South Korea. Any attempt to leave the island without a proper visa may be treated as a violation of immigration law and could result in penalties, including future travel restrictions.
In cases where entry is denied, passengers are typically returned on the next available flight operated by the same airline. Depending on flight schedules, individuals may be required to remain temporarily in a holding facility until departure.
The embassy clarified that it cannot overturn immigration decisions but will provide appropriate consular assistance to Indian nationals when required.
