UN Security Council Condemns RSF Attacks and Humanitarian Abuses in Sudan

The UN Security Council on Tuesday strongly condemned the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan for ongoing assaults, atrocities, and destabilization across the country.

Council members expressed alarm at violations against civilians, including arbitrary detention, conflict-related sexual violence, and reports of systematic killings, mass displacement, and summary executions in Kordofan and Darfur. The Security Council stressed that such acts may constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The council also condemned attacks on humanitarian personnel and infrastructure, including repeated drone strikes affecting World Food Programme operations since February. Officials warned that “deliberate attacks against humanitarian personnel, their premises and assets may constitute war crimes” and called for all parties to respect international humanitarian law.

Recognizing the severe impact of conflict-induced famine and extreme food insecurity, the UNSC demanded safe and unhindered humanitarian access and urged that “starvation must not be used as a weapon of war.” Members emphasized the need for immediate cessation of hostilities and protection of civilians throughout Sudan.

The Security Council welcomed regional and international coordination aimed at establishing a humanitarian truce, calling it a crucial step toward an inclusive, Sudanese-led ceasefire and political process. Members stressed that external interference undermining peace should be avoided and reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
