Worker Strike Disrupts Flights at Kenya’s Main Airport
A workers’ strike at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport caused flight delays on Monday, disrupting operations at Kenya’s busiest aviation hub.
Kenya Airways confirmed that air traffic control delays were affecting some departures and arrivals at the airport, which serves as a key gateway for regional and international travel across Africa.
The disruption stems from an ongoing labor dispute between the aviation workers’ union and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. Union representatives have raised concerns over unresolved worker grievances, including the failure to finalize a collective bargaining agreement.
Last week, the union issued a seven-day strike notice after negotiations failed to produce an agreement. In response, the civil aviation authority sought court intervention in an attempt to prevent the strike from proceeding.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is one of Africa’s major air transport hubs, handling significant passenger and cargo traffic. Any prolonged disruption could impact regional connectivity and airline schedules.
Authorities have not yet indicated how long the delays may continue, but passengers have been advised to check with their airlines for updated travel information.
