US Aircraft Carrier Shoots Down Iranian Drone as Gulf Tensions Rise Before Nuclear Talks
A US aircraft carrier strike group shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea after the aircraft approached in what American officials described as an unsafe and aggressive manner, adding to rising military tensions just days before planned diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran.
According to a US military spokesperson, the unmanned aircraft moved toward the USS Abraham Lincoln while it was operating in international waters. Despite what the military said were attempts to avoid escalation, the drone continued its approach and was destroyed by a fighter jet launched from the carrier. No American personnel were injured and the ship was not damaged, officials said.
Iranian state-linked media reported that a drone operating over international waters lost contact with its controllers during a reconnaissance mission. Iranian officials said the cause of the loss of communication was under investigation.
Hours after the aerial incident, another confrontation unfolded in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes. US officials said two vessels linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps maneuvered close to a US-flagged commercial tanker and issued radio warnings threatening to board the ship.
American naval forces responded by dispatching a guided-missile destroyer to escort the tanker while US military aircraft provided air cover. The situation eased without shots being fired, according to the military, which described the Iranian actions as dangerous and unprofessional.
The back-to-back incidents come at a sensitive diplomatic moment. US and Iranian officials are expected to hold talks aimed at preventing a broader military confrontation and addressing disputes over Iran’s nuclear activities. However, uncertainty remains over the format and scope of the negotiations after Tehran proposed changes to the meeting arrangements.
US officials have said their concerns extend beyond Iran’s nuclear programme to include its ballistic missile development and regional security activities. Iranian leaders, meanwhile, have signaled they want discussions to focus more narrowly on nuclear issues.
The military tension has unfolded alongside an increased US naval presence in the Middle East. The carrier strike group operating in the region includes advanced fighter aircraft and multiple escort ships, part of a broader deployment intended to deter threats to shipping and allied forces.
