UK and European Allies Say Russia Used Rare Toxin to Kill Alexei Navalny

The United Kingdom and several European allies have accused Russia of killing opposition leader Alexei Navalny using a poison derived from a rare dart frog toxin, two years after his death in a Siberian penal colony.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said analysis of material samples taken from Navalny’s body detected epibatidine, a powerful neurotoxin naturally found in certain South American dart frogs. She stated that “only the Russian state had the means, motive and opportunity” to deploy such a substance while Navalny was imprisoned.

A joint statement issued by the UK, Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands said the presence of epibatidine in Navalny’s body had no innocent explanation. The statement argued that the toxin is not naturally found in Russia and that dart frogs in captivity do not produce it, reinforcing their conclusion that the Russian state was responsible.

Russia has rejected the allegation. According to state media reports, officials described the findings as part of an “information campaign.” Moscow has previously denied involvement in Navalny’s death.

Navalny, an anti-corruption campaigner and one of President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critics, died on 16 February 2024 at the age of 47 while serving a prison sentence in a remote Arctic penal colony. He had earlier survived a 2020 poisoning with a Novichok nerve agent and was arrested upon returning to Russia after medical treatment abroad.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised Navalny’s courage, saying his efforts to expose corruption left a lasting legacy. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also paid tribute, describing Navalny as a figure who fought for a democratic Russia.

Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, welcomed the announcement, stating she had long believed her husband was poisoned and expressed gratitude to European authorities for their investigation.

Epibatidine is an extremely potent neurotoxin that acts on the central nervous system. Toxicology experts say it can cause muscle paralysis, seizures, respiratory failure and death. The compound occurs naturally only in tiny amounts in specific wild frog species in South America and has been considered too dangerous for medical use due to its high toxicity.

The UK Foreign Office said it has notified the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons regarding Russia’s alleged breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Navalny’s death continues to draw international scrutiny, further straining relations between Russia and Western governments.
