UAE’s Yahya Alghassani: Inspiring the Next Generation of Football Talent
UAE forward Yahya Alghassani is emerging as a leading figure in Emirati football, not just for his performances on the pitch but also for his efforts to nurture young talent across the country. The Shabab Al-Ahli star recently captained the national team in the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar, showcasing his growing leadership role.
Alghassani, 27, has become a prominent figure in the UAE national squad, bridging the gap left by the retirement of Omar Abdulrahman earlier this year. With a blend of skill, discipline, and experience, he has stepped up to guide the next generation of Emirati players.
Empowering Young Players
In December, following the Arab Cup, Alghassani launched a youth tournament, the Talent Cup, at the Dubai Police Club Stadium. His goal: to provide a platform for young players to showcase their abilities and gain exposure to professional scouts.
“These kids need outlets for their energy,” Alghassani said. “Instead of wasting it elsewhere, football gives them a constructive path. I know what it means to be discovered at a young age, and now it’s my responsibility to give back to the community.”
The tournament welcomed scouts from local and international clubs, offering opportunities for outstanding players to progress into professional football. Alghassani emphasized that his role is to support young talent without interfering with professional selection decisions, ensuring fairness and transparency.
Balancing Leadership and Career
Alghassani’s club career includes a youth stint at Al-Ahli, a spell at Al-Wahda, and a return to Shabab Al-Ahli in 2021. Internationally, he has become a key senior player amid competition from naturalized foreign stars. His captaincy during the Arab Cup matches against Algeria and Morocco reflected his maturity, providing last-minute team guidance and motivation on the field.
Despite the UAE’s early exit from the tournament, with the third-place play-off against Saudi Arabia canceled due to weather, Alghassani remains focused on the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia, aiming to deliver strong performances on home soil.
Giving Back to the Community
Beyond the pitch, Alghassani is actively involved in charity and youth development initiatives. Partnering with Al-Jalila Foundation, the Dubai Sports Council, and private supporters such as Red Bull, Whoop, and Nike, he provides resources and training opportunities to aspiring footballers.
“I was fortunate to have opportunities when I was young, and now I want to ensure these kids have the same chance,” Alghassani said. “It’s all about giving back to society and helping local talent flourish.”
Looking Ahead
Alghassani also acknowledges the inspiration he draws from UAE football legends like Ali Mabkhout and Omar Abdulrahman, aiming to continue their legacy both on and off the field. While he remains committed to Shabab Al-Ahli, the prospect of a professional career abroad remains on his mind as part of his broader ambition.
“Every professional player dreams of testing themselves abroad,” he said. “If the opportunity arises and my club supports it, I would welcome it.”
With his dedication to youth development, leadership on the pitch, and commitment to UAE football, Yahya Alghassani is not just a player — he is a role model shaping the future of the sport in the Emirates.
