Mexico City – Two Family Members of Mexico Education Secretary Killed in Colima Shooting as authorities in the western state report that three suspects were killed following a deadly gun attack on Saturday morning.
The victims, identified by Secretary of Public Education Mario Delgado as his aunt Eugenia Delgado and cousin Sheila, were shot at their home around 4:30 am local time. Officials did not immediately disclose a motive for the attack.
Colima, located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, has one of the highest homicide rates in the country, ranking among the most violent states in Mexico for 2023 and 2024.
Authorities tracked a vehicle linked to the suspects to a residence in Colima later on Saturday, where a gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of three suspects. Weapons and clothing tied to the double shooting were recovered at the location.
Expressing grief on social media, Delgado said, “Deep shock, outrage, and sorrow over the events that occurred this morning in Colima, where my aunt Eugenia Delgado and my cousin Sheila were brutally murdered in their home.”
Delgado was appointed Mexico’s Education Secretary in 2024 by President Claudia Sheinbaum and previously served as the national president of the ruling Morena party. Investigations into the shooting remain ongoing.
