Swiss Train Derails in Goppenstein, Injuries Feared
A passenger train derailed early Monday morning in southern Switzerland, raising concerns that several people may have been injured, according to local police.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. local time in the village of Goppenstein. Police said injuries were likely but did not immediately provide details on the number of passengers affected or the severity of any injuries.
Switzerland’s federal railway operator, Swiss Federal Railways, announced that train traffic between Goppenstein and Brig had been suspended. Initial information indicated that the disruption may be linked to an avalanche in the area.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and authorities said further information would be released as it becomes available.
Switzerland is known for its extensive and efficient rail network, which connects cities, towns, and remote alpine communities. The country has one of the highest per capita rail usage rates in Europe. While rail accidents are relatively rare, incidents have occurred during severe weather conditions, including a 2023 derailment near Bern that left multiple passengers injured.
Investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of Monday’s derailment.
