Rubio Warns Iraq Against Pro-Iran Government as Al-Maliki Prepares Return

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned Iraq against forming a government influenced by Iran as former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki is poised to return to power. Iraq’s largest Shiite parliamentary bloc has nominated al-Maliki, raising concerns in Washington about foreign influence over Baghdad.

In a call with current Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Rubio expressed hope that the next government will make Iraq a force for stability, prosperity, and security in the Middle East. He emphasized that a government dominated by Iran would struggle to prioritize Iraq’s national interests, remain neutral in regional conflicts, or maintain strong partnerships with the United States.

Rubio’s warning comes amid ongoing political negotiations in Baghdad. Iraq’s parliament is scheduled to elect a president this week, who will formally appoint the next prime minister. The developments highlight the delicate balance between domestic political decisions and international expectations.
