Rubio Calls for Renewed US-Europe Alliance — on Trump’s Terms

At the Munich Security Conference, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that America and Europe are closely connected, describing the US as “a child of Europe” and offering a conditional proposal for a renewed partnership.

In his speech, Rubio said the United States seeks to build a new global order and prefers to do so alongside Europe, though he stressed that the US is prepared to act independently if necessary. He framed the alliance as a revival of shared history and civilization, highlighting that the destinies of the two continents are intertwined.

While his tone was conciliatory, delegates noted that the partnership was largely structured around former President Donald Trump’s policies rather than a fully equal alliance. Rubio criticized what he called a “managed decline” of Western nations and urged a revitalization of political, economic, and cultural ties, arguing that societal malaise, not just policy missteps, had weakened the West.

He also stressed national sovereignty, framing control over borders as a fundamental duty rather than xenophobia or hate. Rubio linked mass migration and economic dependency on foreign powers to broader threats to Western stability and civilization.

Rubio called for reforming and strengthening international institutions rather than dismantling them, arguing that the US under Trump had already taken decisive action in crises such as Gaza and Ukraine. He urged European nations to join the US in a more assertive global stance, emphasizing the importance of confronting threats without relying solely on diplomacy or international law.

Throughout the speech, Rubio praised Europe’s history and contributions but questioned whether the continent could fully align with the US in rebuilding a global order. While he briefly mentioned narrowing differences with Europe on key issues, he noted that the remaining challenges would be the most difficult to resolve.
