Oman Successfully Operates New Artificial Rainmaking Station in Khasab
Oman has successfully completed the construction and operation of a new artificial rainmaking station in the Wilayat of Khasab, located in the Musandam Governorate, as part of its broader strategy to enhance water sustainability.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources confirmed that the new station is now operational and aims to boost rainfall, support groundwater recharge, and strengthen long-term water security across the region.
According to officials, the station’s impact zone extends northwest and southward, covering an area of up to 70 kilometers, depending on geographical and meteorological conditions. The system is designed to enhance cloud formation and increase the probability of rainfall in targeted areas.
The project forms part of Oman’s expanding artificial rainmaking network, which uses ionization technology to stimulate cloud condensation and promote precipitation. With the launch of the Khasab facility, the total number of rainmaking stations operating across the Sultanate has risen to 14.
The national network includes 11 stations distributed across the Eastern and Western Hajar Mountains, one in Musandam, and two located in the Dhofar mountain region. Authorities say this distribution ensures wider geographical coverage and improved operational coordination.
Officials described the initiative as a reflection of Oman’s commitment to integrating modern technologies into water resource management. The project is intended to enhance climate resilience, strengthen ecosystem adaptability, and contribute to sustainable development objectives.
The Ministry also confirmed that further studies are underway to identify additional suitable locations for future stations. Site selection will consider climatic and topographical conditions while avoiding overlap with existing facilities to maximize efficiency and impact.
The expansion of artificial rainmaking infrastructure highlights Oman’s continued efforts to address water scarcity challenges and reinforce national water security amid changing climate patterns.
