Oman Stands with Kuwait in Maritime Border Dispute
The Sultanate of Oman has expressed strong support for Kuwait amid ongoing maritime boundary concerns with Iraq. Oman’s Foreign Ministry stated that the recent lists of coordinates and maps submitted by Iraq to the United Nations infringe upon Kuwait’s sovereignty over its maritime zones and established water features.
In a formal statement, the ministry reaffirmed Oman’s solidarity with Kuwait, emphasizing that the historical and fraternal ties between the two nations should guide regional cooperation. Oman urged Iraq to respect principles of good neighborliness and comply with international law in addressing the dispute.
The statement also highlighted the importance of adhering to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Oman called on all parties to honor existing bilateral agreements, understandings, and memoranda of cooperation between the two brotherly states.
Oman’s stance underscores its commitment to regional stability and respect for international maritime laws, while supporting Kuwait in protecting its territorial rights in shared waters.
