OIC to Hold Emergency Meeting After Israel Recognizes Somaliland
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has called an emergency meeting following Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, a move the group says threatens Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The OIC’s General Secretariat announced that an extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers will take place on Saturday at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah to address the rapidly developing situation in the Horn of Africa.
According to the statement, the meeting will focus on what the OIC described as a serious violation of Somalia’s territorial unity, stressing that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Somali state under international law.
The emergency session aims to coordinate a unified stance among member states and reaffirm full support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Officials said the outcome of the meeting will reflect the organization’s commitment to upholding international law and protecting the stability of member countries.
The decision has sparked diplomatic concern across the region, with observers warning that recognition of breakaway territories could set a precedent affecting stability beyond Somalia’s borders.
