The United States has reiterated its call for the ceasefire agreement in northeastern Syria to be maintained, emphasizing the need for stability and continued humanitarian access in the region.

US envoy for Syria Tom Barrack said Washington remains committed to supporting efforts that prevent renewed fighting between Syrian government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces. In a statement shared on social media, Barrack highlighted a recent phone call with Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, during which they discussed the security situation and the importance of upholding the ceasefire.

Barrack stressed the need to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches vulnerable communities, particularly in areas affected by recent tensions such as Kobani. He said continued cooperation among regional actors is essential to avoid further escalation and protect civilians.

Masoud Barzani has played a longstanding role in Kurdish political leadership, while current regional authorities have recently welcomed steps taken by Syria’s leadership to formally recognize the Kurdish population as a core part of the country.

The US envoy also reaffirmed Washington’s support for the agreement reached on January 18, which outlines plans to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces into state institutions. The SDF, a Kurdish-led group operating in northeastern Syria, has been involved in recent clashes with government forces, raising concerns over the fragility of the ceasefire.

Syrian authorities have since announced a temporary extension of the ceasefire, signaling ongoing efforts to prevent renewed violence. Despite this, the situation on the ground remains sensitive, with international observers closely watching developments.

US officials say maintaining the ceasefire is critical for advancing political dialogue, ensuring humanitarian access, and preventing further instability in northeastern Syria.
