MWL Chief Addresses Hate and Human Dignity at George Washington University

The Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, delivered a lecture at George Washington University focusing on the principles of human dignity, tolerance, and the global responsibility to confront hatred.

The event was hosted by university president Ellen M. Granberg and attended by academics, students, and representatives from various research institutions. The lecture was followed by a discussion examining the broader concept of hatred and hostility toward religious and ethnic communities, and how such attitudes undermine human dignity and fundamental rights.

In his address, Al-Issa stressed that respect for human dignity is a core principle in Islamic teachings. He explained that Islamic law strictly prohibits any form of injustice or discrimination against individuals based on faith, race, or background. He highlighted that Islam rejects racism and contempt, affirming equality among all people.

Quoting a verse from the Qur’an — “And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam” (17:70) — Al-Issa emphasized that dignity is an inherent right granted to every human being without hierarchy or exception.

He described hatred as a dangerous emotion that can escalate into discriminatory and racist behavior if left unaddressed. Preventing such attitudes, he noted, requires early education and awareness-building within families and schools, alongside strong legal frameworks. He underscored that fighting hatred is a shared global responsibility that demands cooperation and solidarity.

Last week, Al-Issa was honored at the US Capitol by bipartisan members of Congress in recognition of the league’s efforts to promote religious coexistence and counter hate-driven narratives. Lawmakers from both the House and Senate signed a certificate commending the organization’s role in fostering social cohesion.

Al-Issa said the recognition reflects universal Islamic values that encourage peace, dialogue, and mutual understanding. He reaffirmed the Muslim World League’s commitment to advancing constructive engagement and cooperation to build more inclusive societies.
