Kyrgios defeats Sabalenka in Dubai ‘Battle of the Sexes’ exhibition match

Dubai hosted an electrifying “Battle of the Sexes: The Dubai Showdown” on Sunday, where Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 6-3 in front of a sold-out crowd at the Coca Cola Arena.

Kyrgios received the winner’s trophy from Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum bin Juma Al-Maktoum, former UAE national tennis player and president of the UAE Padel Tennis Association. After the match, Kyrgios praised Sabalenka’s performance, saying: “Firstly this wasn’t a win for me, it was a win for both of us. She is an incredible player and really tested me. I’ve beaten some of the best of all time, and Aryna showed she can compete at the highest level.”

The Australian admitted to feeling pressure ahead of the exhibition. “I struggled to sleep last night. I knew there was a lot of attention around this game and I wasn’t going to take it lightly. I loved being here in Dubai, with friends and in this arena. She really made me sweat.”

Sabalenka also reflected positively on the match, stating: “I really enjoyed the challenge. It was unpredictable for both of us; I had to adjust my serve and find the right position for my kick serve. The energy in the arena was incredible, and I hope fans around the world enjoyed it as much as we did.”

Ahmed Al-Khaja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, highlighted Dubai’s growing reputation as a hub for major sporting events. “The event delivered a world-class experience for fans and showcased the city on an international stage,” he said.

TLive, making its Middle East debut, also praised the event’s reception. Michel Lamuniere, Chairman and CEO, said: “The energy inside the arena was incredible, and the response from fans exceeded our expectations. We’re proud to have delivered an iconic event in Dubai and grateful to our partners for bringing this vision to life.
