Japan Plans to Deploy Surface-to-Air Missiles on Yonaguni Island Near Taiwan by 2031

Japan has announced plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island, a remote western island near Taiwan, by March 2031, marking the first time the government has specified a timeline for the strategic deployment since it was first announced in 2022.

Yonaguni, located just 110 km from Taiwan, holds strategic significance amid ongoing regional tensions. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to “reunify” with the self-ruled island. The proximity of Yonaguni makes it a potential frontline for Japan’s defense strategy.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that the Yonaguni unit will be equipped with medium-range surface-to-air missiles capable of intercepting incoming aircraft and missiles. The system has a range of approximately 50 km, 360-degree coverage, and can track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12 simultaneously.

The announcement follows escalating tensions between Tokyo and Beijing, intensified in November when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi indicated that Japan would activate its self-defense forces in the event of an attack on Taiwan. Beijing reacted strongly, deploying warships, limiting rare earth exports, restricting Chinese tourism, canceling concerts, and even reclaiming pandas from Japanese zoos.

On Monday, China imposed export curbs on 20 Japanese companies, citing national security concerns, a day before Koizumi revealed the missile deployment timeline.

Yonaguni has been gradually transformed into a military outpost over the past decade, currently hosting around 160 self-defense force personnel and coastal surveillance units. An electronic warfare unit, capable of disrupting enemy communications and radar, is scheduled to be established on the island in fiscal year 2026 (April 2026–March 2027).

Koizumi emphasized that while the current plan targets fiscal year 2030 for full deployment, the timeline could adjust depending on the progress of facility improvements.

The missile deployment signals Japan’s increasingly assertive stance on regional defense and highlights how the country perceives its frontline near Taiwan. Analysts say the move demonstrates Japan’s readiness to bolster its self-defense capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions in East Asia.
