Iranian Drone Hits British Air Base in Cyprus as RAF Akrotiri Targeted
AKROTIRI – An Iranian drone hits British air base in Cyprus, causing limited damage to a runway at RAF Akrotiri, according to Cypriot and British officials.
The overnight strike targeted the Royal Air Force installation shortly after midnight. Authorities confirmed there were no injuries, though the impact triggered security alerts across the surrounding area.
Officials believe the drone involved was an Iranian-made Shahed model, reportedly launched from outside Cyprus. Sources indicated the aircraft flew at very low altitude, which may have made early detection difficult. While the base was the intended target, Cypriot authorities stressed that the Republic of Cyprus itself was not the focus of the attack.
During the day, two additional drones were detected heading toward the base. Air defense systems responded quickly, intercepting the aerial threats before they could reach the facility.
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides stated that all national security services remain on high alert and in full operational readiness.
RAF Akrotiri is one of two sovereign British military bases retained on the island since Cyprus gained independence in 1960. The base has previously supported operations in the Middle East. Recent regional tensions have heightened security concerns, particularly after Western military activity targeting Iran.
British officials acknowledged that the UK was among the intended targets amid the widening regional conflict. Authorities continue to assess the situation as military alert levels remain elevated.
