Germany to Extend Border Checks for Six More Months

Germany will extend its temporary border controls for an additional six months beyond March 15 due to ongoing security concerns, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said on Monday.

According to government sources, Berlin has informed the European Commission about the decision, as required under European Union regulations.

The interior minister stated that the continued border checks are part of Germany’s broader efforts to reorganize its migration policy and strengthen national security. The measures apply to Germany’s land borders with neighboring countries and are intended to address irregular migration and security challenges.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on France to increase its defense spending in order to reinforce Europe’s strategic autonomy. In a radio interview, he said that discussions about European sovereignty must be supported by concrete national commitments.

Wadephul referred to French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that ambitions for stronger European defense capabilities require increased investment and practical action.

Germany has periodically reintroduced border controls in recent years amid migration pressures and evolving security concerns. The latest extension signals Berlin’s continued focus on tightening border management while engaging in broader European security discussions.
