Crane Collapse in Thailand Kills at Least 22 People
Sikhio, Thailand — At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured after a construction crane fell onto a passenger train in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province on Wednesday.
The train, which was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, was passing beneath the crane when it collapsed. Several carriages derailed, trapping passengers inside. Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and medical teams, rushed to the scene to evacuate passengers and provide treatment.
Authorities said preliminary investigations suggest the crane may have lost stability during lifting operations. Experts are examining whether mechanical failure, structural issues, or operational mistakes caused the collapse.
Hospitals in the area treated more than 30 injured passengers, several in critical condition. Rescue operations continued for several hours as officials worked to clear debris from the tracks.
The Transport Ministry expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced a temporary suspension of construction projects near railway lines across the country. Officials said safety protocols would be reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Train services on the affected route were suspended, and commuters were advised to use alternative transportation while authorities restored operations.
The government has pledged support for the victims’ families and emphasized the importance of ensuring strict safety measures in Thailand’s expanding rail infrastructure.
